abstract = "This work aims to evaluate spatial inference methods designed for
modeling the susceptibility to mass movements in the city of
S{\~a}o Sebasti{\~a}o, S{\~a}o Paulo. Moreover, this study also
aims to determine the effect of the inclusion of geomorfometric
variables, namely vertical and horizontal curvatures, in the
model. We compared two methods of spatial inference: Boolean and
Fuzzy Gama. These methods have been tested with five variables
(geomorphology, geology, pedology, land use, and slope) and then
with seven variables: the former five ones besides the vertical
(kv) and horizontal curvature (kh). The Boolean model displays
only two classes (favorable and not favorable) for the occuring
phenomenon. Regarding the Fuzzy Gama method, the qualitative
transformation of numeric values turned feasible handling the
uncertainties, inherent in natural phenomena, such as the gradual
transitions between classes of terrain and between classes of
vegetation cover. With regard to results, the Boolean method did
not allow a detailed categorization of susceptibility classes in
both cases (with five and with seven variables). The Fuzzy Gama
method presented greater flexibility in the identification of
areas and in the generation of scenarios in both cases. This was
rendered possible through the manipulation of the gama index
values (0.60, 0.63, 0.65, 0.70). The addition of the vertical and
horizontal curvatures into the model enabled its refinement, and
hence, a better performance. The Fuzzy Gama method presented more
satisfactory results.",
